Enhance your teaching abilities by applying evidence-based language acquisition techniques to educate non-native English speakers. The Department of Linguistics provides an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, equipping students for careers in ESL instruction, foreign language teaching, or K-12 language arts education (with supplementary certification and coursework through the College of Education). Our MA programs also establish a strong groundwork for PhD studies in second language acquisition and ESL pedagogy. The ESL practicum frequently includes international opportunities, allowing students to gain hands-on experience developing and delivering English language instruction, including real-world teaching practice with non-native speakers.
Our Linguistics and English as a Second Language Master's programs provide comprehensive training across all fundamental aspects of the field, preparing graduates for diverse professional paths in sectors such as: Bioinformatics, Education, Government, Law, and Natural Language Processing. The ESL MA specifically trains students for careers in teaching English as a second or foreign language, as well as K-12 language arts instruction (with additional certification from the College of Education).
These programs also create an ideal foundation for advanced doctoral research in Linguistics and related language disciplines, including speech pathology, deaf education, audiology, or ESL instruction.
