The Doctor of Philosophy degree signifies achieving an advanced level of academic expertise, demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications and an original dissertation contributing significant scientific and engineering value. Our electrical engineering PhD program has two primary educational goals: First, to equip graduates with the skills to pioneer research in uncharted territories, uncovering groundbreaking principles that could transform the technology industry. Second, to provide PhD candidates with training in innovation and commercialization, preparing them to become future entrepreneurs who generate high-tech employment opportunities.
Beyond developing scholars who produce novel knowledge and perform cutting-edge research in electrical engineering, our faculty intentionally mentors PhD students to emerge as pioneers and executives of tomorrow's technology enterprises. These graduates will aim not merely to secure employment, but to generate new jobs across the DFW metroplex, Texas, and the country through technological breakthroughs and business ventures. As part of this mission, all electrical engineering PhD candidates must complete 9 credit hours in the College of Business, earning a business management minor focused on entrepreneurship, innovation, and technological leadership. To further embed this innovative and entrepreneurial mindset, each dissertation committee must include at least one industry specialist in the relevant technical field.
