UNT's Sacred Music program equips you for professional musical leadership roles in contemporary church settings. This distinctive program at UNT is designed to develop future leaders in music, worship, and arts for modern churches, drawing students from diverse denominational backgrounds and musical specialties - including organists, choir directors, singers, worship leaders, and instrumentalists.
The Bachelor of Music degree with a performance major focusing on orchestral instruments (organ) and church music specialization gives students the essential skills to refine their technique and artistry by studying and performing works from different eras and styles. It introduces them to various professional performance aspects while preparing them for advanced studies in prestigious graduate programs or direct entry into professional performance and teaching careers upon graduation. Students gain exposure to diverse music career paths through external performances, masterclasses, and cultural exchange opportunities.
This interdisciplinary, ecumenical program cultivates critical thinking as students examine, interpret, and experience Christian music across multiple contexts.
Acknowledging various church music leadership approaches, the curriculum offers comprehensive training in performance, professional development, and academic skills. All courses include learning opportunities with expert guest lecturers from the Dallas-Fort Worth region.
Organ program faculty includes Jesse Eschbach, Paul Leenhouts, Brad Bennight, Michael Conrady, and Teaching Fellow Sungyun Kim. Notable achievements by current students and alumni include Hentus van Rooyen, Destin Wernicke, Sungyun Kim, Jonathan Story, Samuel Gaskin, and Christoph Hintermüller.
