Recreation therapy graduates learn to employ leisure activities and various therapeutic interventions to enhance the functional skills and wellbeing of individuals with disabilities or health conditions across all age groups. Their work supports and enhances physical, occupational, and speech therapies, alongside other health services, helping clients adapt to medical challenges and learn new lifestyle approaches.
After earning a B.A. in recreation therapy, graduates qualify for licensure as Licensed Recreation Therapists (LRT) through North Carolina's licensing board and can pursue certification as Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) via the NCTRC national exam. These credentials are attainable before completing a master's degree in gerontology.
