The Master of Education (M.Ed.) program in Higher Education with a focus on Student Affairs Administration (SAAHE) equips professionals for careers in student services at colleges and universities. The coursework aligns with both the ACPA/NASPA Professional Competencies and the CAS Standards for graduate-level professional training.
Ideal candidates often demonstrate undergraduate engagement through student organizations, leadership roles, or paraprofessional positions like resident advisors, orientation leaders, or campus ambassadors.
SAAHE participants acquire valuable hands-on experience through graduate assistantships at partner institutions such as UNCG, Salem College, Wake Forest University, Guilford College, Winston-Salem State University, and UNC School of the Arts. Students also undertake a 150-hour internship, often through national programs like ACUHO-I, NODA, NACA, or ACUI, or through customized placements. Historically, approximately 90% of graduates secure employment within six months of completing the program.
The curriculum includes 9 credits of graduate electives, which may be chosen from HED offerings or other departments. Popular HED electives cover topics such as Academic Advising, Black Student Experiences, Crisis Intervention, Student Affairs Coaching, Applied Research Methods, and Financial Management in Student Affairs. Many students complement their studies with relevant courses from Peace and Conflict Studies, Educational Leadership, Women's and Gender Studies, African American Studies, or Counseling programs.
Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or appropriately evaluated credentials for non-U.S. schools.
English Language Proficiency: TOEFL: internet based - 79, or paper based - 550. A score of at least 6.5 is required on the IELTS.
