The program mandates 39 hours of graduate-level coursework, structured in three phases: (1) foundational courses, (2) specialized electives, and (3) research components. These stages must be sequentially completed to earn the MPA degree. Core curriculum covers political and legal frameworks, economic and social dynamics, organizational leadership, financial management principles, and data-driven decision-making tools. Up to six (6) pre-admission graduate credits may count toward the 39-hour requirement, pending MPA Director approval. Students must fulfill a professional experience component through either an approved internship or relevant work engagement (refer to Professional Involvement and Internship options). Beyond coursework, a capstone project on a substantive topic is required for degree completion.

Qualification Requirements

Requirements for admission to full standing in the Master of Public Administration (MPA) Degree Program include:
A complete application to the Graduate School with paid application fee. Applications can be completed on-line here.
Possession of a bachelor's degree, or its equivalent, from an accredited college or university.
An undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
An appropriate score on the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical sections of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). Typically, minimally acceptable scores for admitted students are 150 Verbal, and 144 Quantitative, and 3.0 Analytical. The school code for UNC Charlotte is 5105.
Letters of recommendation (3) preferably from those familiar with your academic and work abilities (e.g., professors or employers).
Statement of purpose (1-2 pages in length) in which the applicant explains his/her career goals, how the MPA degree fits into achieving those goals, and any significant work experience, particularly in the public or nonprofit sectors.
Submission of official transcripts from all postsecondary educational institutions in which the candidate was enrolled.
A minimum TOEFL score of 220 (computer-based), 557 (paper-based), or 83 (internet-based) or a minimum IELTS band score of 6.5 required from any applicant whose native language is not English
