The Geography program focuses on social science principles and techniques that highlight the significance of location. This field examines spatial differences—how characteristics change across the Earth's surface, the connections between places, and the forces influencing their evolution and interactions.
Geography is explored at various scales, from local to worldwide, and through multiple lenses (social, cultural, political, economic, and environmental). Key themes include urbanization, globalization, migration, sustainability, land use patterns, transportation networks, the movement of goods and information, business site selection, environmental planning, and human-environment relationships in urban and rural contexts. Particular attention is given to how these elements influence our communities, workplaces, and daily interactions. Geographic research employs tools like information technology, cartography, statistical methods, social area studies, remote sensing, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Numerous courses equip students with modern spatial analysis concepts and techniques. The department also oversees the interdisciplinary Urban Studies Minor. Geography graduates pursue careers in urban planning, cartography, GIS, market research, transportation logistics, real estate, and education. While bachelor's degrees open diverse career paths, advanced studies expand opportunities further.
