The Department of Languages and Culture Studies offers programs focused on enhancing linguistic abilities and fostering cultural understanding through language, literature, and translation studies. Beyond majors, minors, and undergraduate certificates, the department provides courses in Ancient and Modern Greek, Farsi, Hebrew, Latin, Portuguese, Swahili, and additional languages, available upon request or via the NC Language Exchange. Students pursuing foreign language education can consider these pathways: A standalone major in French, German, Japanese, or Spanish following the traditional liberal arts framework, with optional teaching certification A dual major combining a foreign language with another field or pairing two languages A minor in Arabic, Chinese, Classics, Francophone Studies, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish Language-focused coursework to supplement a primary major in another discipline A specialized course sequence culminating in a certificate program.
