Our graduate program offers MA, PhD, and dual-degree options, combining an MA in Art History with an MS from the School of Information and Library Science. This interdisciplinary curriculum equips students for academic and professional paths by cultivating research and writing abilities within a collaborative setting that celebrates visual arts scholarship. Our faculty expertise covers diverse artistic practices across cultures, mediums, and historical eras. Graduate students benefit from proximity to the Ackland Art Museum (adjacent to our department), robust regional studies resources, comprehensive art and special collections libraries, collaborative opportunities with Duke University through student/faculty exchanges, and a dynamic local arts community. The 36-credit MA program (12 courses) typically spans two years (4 semesters), concluding with a thesis. MA candidates seeking to advance to the PhD program must secure faculty advisor support and submit a complete PhD application through Slate prior to earning their master's degree.
For admission to the MA program in Art History, an undergraduate degree in art history is highly recommended, but not required. Students who do not have an undergraduate degree in art history should have 24 credit hours of course work in art history, archaeology, cultural anthropology, and/or aesthetics.
The required minimum total score on the exams are internet-based TOEFL exam = 90, The IELTS exam = 7.
