The Statistics PhD Program offers students comprehensive training across applied statistics, theoretical statistics, and probability, along with various specialized courses. This extensive curriculum has effectively prepared graduates for successful careers in academic, corporate, and public sector roles. Candidates engage in diverse dissertation projects spanning practical statistical applications to advanced probability theory. Numerous students participate in cross-disciplinary research, fostering regular collaboration with faculty and peers from other UNC departments and occasionally other universities. Previous collaborative efforts have involved partnerships with Environmental Sciences, Biology, the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Computer Science, Biostatistics, Economics, and the Carolina Center for Genome Sciences.
The minimum requirements are a bachelor's degree (based on a four-year curriculum) completed before graduate study begins or its international equivalent with an accredited institution; an average grade of B (cumulative GPA 3.0) or better. The prerequisite courses required to apply to any of the Ph.D. programs are: real analysis, linear algebra, calculus-based probability and statistics.
The required minimum total score on the exams are internet-based TOEFL exam = 90, The IELTS exam = 7.
