The Graduate Program in Literatures, Languages, and Cultures of the Iberian Peninsula and the Americas prepares scholars, researchers, and educators to critically examine the literary, linguistic, and cultural works from these global regions. Doctoral candidates can focus on either continent's literature and culture or pursue a transatlantic perspective combining both. All students develop a comprehensive understanding, as their written exams will cover both areas. The program emphasizes viewing these regions not as isolated subjects but as interconnected spaces where cultural expressions reveal profound connections when studied together.
Faculty members bring diverse interdisciplinary expertise spanning historical, literary, linguistic, social, and cultural studies, including film and visual media. Graduate research and coursework explore ancient roots while examining transatlantic exchanges between Spain, Portugal, the Americas, Africa, and Asia, as well as cultural dialogues within the Iberian Peninsula, Africa, and across the Americas. Students can design their studies to incorporate diaspora studies (focusing on Hispanic communities worldwide) or explore indigenous, African, and Portuguese languages in the Americas, alongside regional Iberian languages like Catalan, Basque, and Galician. The curriculum also provides strong foundations in literary theory and criticism, with optional specializations in film and visual studies.
