With nearly 500 million speakers worldwide, Spanish ranks as the planet's third most spoken language and second in native speakers. In the United States alone, the Hispanic population exceeding 50 million represents the most rapidly expanding demographic in North America. Given its global significance, mastering Spanish proves invaluable for professionals navigating international business and various career paths. The Spanish Studies program at UNC-CH embraces cutting-edge literary, linguistic, and theoretical perspectives on Hispanic cultures, encompassing indigenous, African-descended, Asian, and other communities. Students pursuing majors or minors gain thorough, critical understanding of Iberian and American literatures, languages, and cultures, frequently engaging in faculty-led research projects. Exceptional Spanish majors may undertake an Honors Thesis under faculty supervision.
