This specialization centers on examining the physical artifacts from prehistoric and ancient classical civilizations, while also offering foundational knowledge in cultural development, historical contexts, and proficiency in at least one classical language. The curriculum aims to equip students with fundamental understanding of Greek and Roman artistic and architectural achievements, while familiarizing them with archaeological methods for reconstructing ancient societies, including those of Egypt and the Near East.
Students pursuing classical archaeology as their primary field cannot select a minor in the classical language used to fulfill their major prerequisites, though they may choose to minor in the alternative classical language. Prospective classical archaeology majors are encouraged to seek departmental guidance at the earliest opportunity.
