The Department of History and Philosophy provides a Master of Arts in History (M.A.), featuring specialized tracks in Public History and International and Global Studies. Our graduate curriculum delivers rigorous instruction in historical methodology, investigative techniques, and academic writing, equipping students for diverse professional paths across industries. The department takes pride in effectively readying students for advanced academic pursuits as well.

The M.A. program in history offers comprehensive education for qualified students across multiple historical disciplines and specializations. Degree requirements include completing 30 credit hours, with a minimum of 15 hours from 6000-level courses, up to 12 hours from 5000-level courses, and at least 3 hours dedicated to thesis research.

All candidates must develop and successfully defend a thesis showcasing proficient historical research and writing abilities. Those with prior graduate coursework in history from other institutions may request transfer of up to 12 credit hours toward their M.A. at the University of New Orleans, subject to departmental approval.

Qualification Requirements

Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. or equivalent from a recognized institution of higher learning abroad.
Applicants enrolled in the final year of a bachelor's degree or international equivalent will be considered for conditional admission.

2.5 overall grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale for a bachelor's degree.
2.75 overall grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale on the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework.
3.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 point scale on at least nine hours of graduate coursework.

IELTS - 6.5, TOEFL - Internet-based test score of 79 total or Computer-based test score of 550. PTE - 58, Duolingo English Test Score of 105
