NSME provides Master's degree programs with three options: Plan I (thesis-based), Plan II (project-based/non-thesis), or Plan III (coursework-only), along with a PhD program. Below are the general degree requirements. Often called the 21st century's Industrial Revolution, nanoscience and nanotechnology focus on phenomena occurring at the nanoscale—approximately one billionth of a meter. For perspective, cell walls measure just five nanometers thick. While industry demand for nanotechnology professionals continues growing, few universities currently provide dedicated degree programs. UNM's collaborative Nanoscience and Microsystems Engineering program, developed jointly by the College of Arts and Sciences and School of Engineering, builds upon foundations in solid-state physics, chemistry, biology, materials science, and engineering. Over 70 faculty members across nine departments collaborated to create this interdisciplinary program, demonstrating how cutting-edge faculty research enhances both graduate and undergraduate education through structured curricula.
