Computer science explores computational systems and processes. It encompasses theories for comprehending these systems along with practical techniques. This field examines all aspects of programs - from problem-solving approaches and construction methods to classification, analysis, verification, graphical applications, and machine learning capabilities. CS employs three primary approaches: engineering (high-performance systems, game development), scientific (AI, machine learning), and mathematical (cryptography, complexity theory).
Since 1973, UNM's Computer Science Department has provided a Master of Science program designed to develop professional expertise in the field. Students can choose between two pathways: the research-focused thesis track (Plan I) or the coursework-based option (Plan II).
