The University of New Mexico's Jazz Studies program offers an in-depth curriculum focused on jazz music, culminating in a Bachelor of Music degree. Students can participate in performance groups featuring two Big Bands and multiple small Jazz Combos. The program also covers essential subjects like improvisation (taught over four semesters), jazz composition, jazz theory with keyboard components, and the history of jazz. These jazz courses welcome all UNM students, irrespective of their primary field of study. While ensemble participation requires auditions, some classes may have prerequisite requirements.

Qualification Requirements

A candidate for the Master of Music degree must have an undergraduate degree in music from an accredited college or equivalent proficiency. An applicant without a music degree will be required to take a proctored test before being admitted, he or she may have to do undergraduate work before becoming a graduate student.
A minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a U.S. 4.0 scale) or comparable grade point average in upper-division (junior and senior level) work and in any graduate work already completed.
