The Master of Music in Wind Conducting is a rigorous program designed for dedicated conductors aiming for careers in either public school music education or academia. Admission is highly selective, with only two students accepted annually to ensure abundant conducting opportunities and personalized mentorship.

Wind conducting students serve as assistants with UNM Bands, gaining comprehensive experience that includes leading the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band, supporting undergraduate conducting instruction, and contributing to Athletic Band programs.

Qualification Requirements

A candidate for the Master of Music degree must have an undergraduate degree in music from an accredited college or equivalent proficiency. An applicant without a music degree will be required to take a proctored test before being admitted, he or she may have to do undergraduate work before becoming a graduate student.
A minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a U.S. 4.0 scale) or comparable grade point average in upper-division (junior and senior level) work and in any graduate work already completed.
