This rigorous, practice-oriented program provides emerging conductors with chances to lead the UNM Symphony Orchestra and UNM Sinfonia, engage with faculty and peers through seminars, lessons, and masterclasses, and explore topics like interpretation, conducting techniques, rehearsal strategies, performance practices, and ensemble dynamics. Graduate assistantships are available, involving tasks such as assisting with rehearsals or concerts, managing the orchestra library, and supporting logistical operations. With only two students admitted, the program ensures ample conducting experience and personalized mentorship.

Qualification Requirements

A candidate for the Master of Music degree must have an undergraduate degree in music from an accredited college or equivalent proficiency. An applicant without a music degree will be required to take a proctored test before being admitted, he or she may have to do undergraduate work before becoming a graduate student.
A minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a U.S. 4.0 scale) or comparable grade point average in upper-division (junior and senior level) work and in any graduate work already completed.
