The University of New Mexico's MFA in Creative Writing prepares graduate students dedicated to a writer's career. This three-year program blends intensive workshops in fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction with specialized courses in literary craft, literature studies, teaching methods, and professional writing.
Our MFA faculty provides three-year teaching assistantships to most students, allowing them to instruct courses ranging from Freshman Composition to Introduction to Creative Writing. We maintain that financial burden shouldn't hinder artistic growth - our program actively encourages all applicants to seek teaching assistantships. While intentionally small compared to national programs, we offer an exceptional student-faculty ratio and three years of competitive stipends, enabling writers to focus deeply on their craft without the financial strain common in many MFA programs.
