Art education explores diverse mediums to convey human perspectives, passions, viewpoints, feelings, and concepts. The University of New Mexico's Studio Art program provides seven specialized focus areas: painting & drawing, photography, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, experimental art & technology, and art & ecology.
The Master of Fine Arts represents the highest academic qualification in studio art, prioritizing artistic innovation. This rigorous three-year program builds upon undergraduate studies (48 course credits plus a 12-credit thesis). While sharing some structural similarities with doctoral programs in other disciplines, the MFA maintains distinct goals and parameters. This degree certifies exceptional artistic achievement, mastery of a chosen specialization, comprehensive understanding of art theory and history, and proven ability to develop and complete substantial creative projects.
