The University of New Mexico has offered graduate studies in Spanish and Portuguese since 1937, granting its first PhD in Hispanic Linguistics. Renowned scholars and authors from around the globe have served on the faculty. The university honors two notable figures through Ortega Hall and the Robert Duncan Reading Room. The Department of Spanish and Portuguese once included Aurelio Espinosa, who pioneered research on Northern New Mexico Spanish dialects, and Rubén Cobos, compiler of the authoritative New Mexico Spanish dictionary. Garland Bills and Neddy Vigil contributed significantly with their Atlas documenting Spanish dialects in New Mexico and Southern Colorado. Internationally celebrated writers like poet Ángel González (recipient of multiple literary honors), Argentine critic Dinko Cvitanovic, and authors Ramón Sender, Gustavo Sainz, and Sabine Ulibarr have all been part of our department. Alumni hold positions at top universities nationwide and excel in various professions. Our conferences focusing on Iberian and Latin American literature and linguistics have achieved remarkable acclaim. Faculty members lead groundbreaking research initiatives, with several receiving recognition for creative works, translations, teaching excellence, and academic scholarship.
