The Master of Arts program spans two years and generally involves completing thirty credit hours of graduate-level courses. (The University of New Mexico follows a semester system, with most classes offering three credit hours each. For graduate students aiming to complete their M.A. within two years, a standard semester workload consists of nine credit hours.) Among these requirements, twelve credit hours (equivalent to four graduate seminars) must fulfill distribution criteria across philosophy's core areas: history of philosophy, metaphysics, ethics, and epistemology. Before graduating, every M.A. candidate must successfully defend a 30-40 page thesis during an oral examination.
