Public economics examines how governments can enhance societal well-being. Experts in this field analyze government-market interactions, especially concerning market failures where goods and services are distributed inefficiently or unfairly. Scholars assess the impacts of laws, regulations, taxation, and public expenditures, with particular attention to healthcare, employment, and education sectors. At UNM, the majority of public economics faculty engage in health-focused research, exploring areas like health disparities, addiction issues, medical marijuana policies, healthcare safety nets, and social insurance programs.
