Biochemistry is an undergraduate program offered by the College of Arts & Sciences. The Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry aligns with or surpasses all curriculum guidelines set by both the American Chemical Society and the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Furthermore, the program adheres to contemporary national educational standards for 21st-century learning. While the Biochemistry major is administered through the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology operates within the School of Medicine, located just north of the main university grounds. Students take introductory courses on the main campus, while upper-level classes and senior research projects occur in two state-of-the-art facilities within the Medical School complex.
This program emphasizes the scientific exploration of living systems' chemistry, including their fundamental molecular components, chemical reactions, metabolic pathways, and information transfer mechanisms, with special focus on carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. The curriculum covers bioorganic chemistry, protein structure and function, bioanalytical techniques, separation methods, regulatory biochemistry, enzyme mechanisms, hormone chemistry, thermal analysis, along with research methodologies and laboratory instrumentation.
