Completion of thirty credit hours in Spanish courses at the 300 level or higher is required. Students must also demonstrate Portuguese proficiency at the 276 or 277 level, either through documentation or coursework. The program includes seven core courses (21 credit hours): 301, 302, 306 or 307, 352, plus one from 350 or 351, one from 411 or 412, and one from 431 or 432. Additionally, three elective courses (9 credit hours) must be taken above 307, with at least one at the 400 level. Note: Only one 301 course (3 credit hours) can count toward the major. Students may choose a general track or specialize in one of these areas: Spanish Peninsular Literature, Spanish American Literature, Southwest Hispanic Studies, or Hispanic Linguistics. Prospective Spanish majors should meet with the Undergraduate Advisor for Spanish. A minimum grade of C is required for all courses.
This program emphasizes the Spanish language and its various dialects. Coursework covers philology, Modern Castilian, Latin American and regional Spanish dialects, along with practical applications in business, technology, and other professional contexts.
