The UNM College of Education & Human Sciences (COEHS) program is dedicated to equipping future educators to address the varied requirements of New Mexico's youth. We honor the state's vibrant cultural heritage and have tailored our coursework to accommodate these distinctive characteristics. Our secondary Education student teaching initiative serves as a dual-location apprenticeship, bridging classroom practice with university theory. We aim to seamlessly integrate the knowledge gained in academic settings with hands-on experience guided by seasoned Cooperating Teachers.
The Bachelor's Degree curriculum (B.A.Ed. or B.S.Ed.) in Secondary Education prepares candidates for teaching positions in middle schools, junior highs, or high schools (grades 7-12). This comprehensive program consists of three key elements:
Core General Education Courses
Specialized Teaching Field Concentrations
Essential Professional Education Components
Participants must consult with a College of Education Academic Advisor during program initiation and maintain contact with their assigned secondary faculty advisor throughout their studies. Enrollment in the professional licensure courses, which follow a Fall/Spring sequence, requires explicit approval from the Secondary Education faculty advisor.
