Prior to the events of September 11, 2001, emergency management careers were experiencing rapid growth. The migration of people to Sun Belt states and high-risk zones like coastal regions, flood-prone areas, and wooded territories intensified the dangers posed by natural disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, and tornadoes, creating greater challenges for communities and businesses. Following 9/11, all forms of terrorism—including biological and chemical threats—became an essential and inseparable component of emergency preparedness.
As just the second program of its kind in New England, the 36-credit M.S. in Emergency Management provides interdisciplinary studies through both online and in-person formats, equipping students for effective careers in disaster reduction and prevention. Participants complete eight core courses addressing critical subjects like risk reduction, emergency preparedness, post-disaster restoration, crisis response coordination, and other key areas. The degree also requires four elective courses, which students—with their advisor's approval—can choose from fields like law enforcement, fire safety, government operations, homeland security, or other relevant disciplines.
This advanced degree program aims to shape emergency management professionals with expertise in foundational principles, scientific understanding, leadership abilities, and technical proficiencies. By enhancing professional standards within the field, the curriculum fosters a proactive approach to emergency situations, strengthening community resilience through problem-solving skills tailored to crisis scenarios.
Applicants must have official university transcripts and proof of bachelor’s degree completion. TOEFL of 80, or IELTS of 6.5, or PTE of 53 is required.
Application deadline: Spring Deadline - November 15 (Priority Application Deadlines).
