Our Master of Arts program in language and linguistics provides comprehensive training in all aspects of human language research. You'll establish foundational knowledge in key disciplines including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics, while also exploring specialized fields such as sociolinguistics, neurolinguistics, bilingual studies, gender and language, and the evolution of English. The program offers an applied linguistics track focusing on TESOL methodologies, curriculum development, and evaluation techniques. Psycholinguistics coursework is available through our psychology department.
The program allows students to customize their M.A. studies according to their academic interests within English language and linguistics. Options range from applied linguistics and ESL instruction to core linguistic disciplines. Additional psycholinguistics courses can be taken through the psychology department.
International applicants must hold a four-year baccalaureate degree or its equivalent as a precondition for applying to any of our graduate programs. In some cases, you may also need a master’s degree or its equivalent.
English Language Score:
Minimum score requirements are as follows: TOEFL (Computer-based): 213; TOEFL (Internet-based): 80; IELTS (International English Language Testing System): 6.5; TOEFL ITP (Institution Administered): On case-by-case basis; TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication): On case-by-case basis; Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: 59.
Applications must be completed by the following deadlines in order to be reviewed for admission: Fall: July 1 (final); Spring: Dec. 1 (final); Summer: April 1 (Admission only).
