Political science equips you with frameworks to analyze critical issues in contemporary society. What drives extreme polarization in U.S. politics? How can societies address entrenched racial and economic disparities? What factors determine whether nations transition to democracy or remain under authoritarian rule? UNH's political science program examines power structures, governing bodies, and policy formation across local, national, and international contexts. Whether examining community activism or global conflicts, political systems profoundly influence our communities and daily experiences. As a student, you'll analyze the frameworks, processes, and ideologies that define global, comparative, and American political systems.
The department's curriculum focuses on governmental systems and political processes, fostering understanding of both individual/collective political behavior and governmental operations: their characteristics, challenges, actions, and interactions across international, national, state, and municipal levels.
Political science education also cultivates engaged citizenship by illuminating formal and informal governance structures, policy-shaping influences, and the values motivating political participation. This knowledge proves particularly beneficial for students pursuing government careers, public service (including diplomatic roles), or legal studies. Those considering academic careers or advanced government positions will find graduate studies essential. An undergraduate political science major establishes strong foundations for advanced political studies and related social science/humanities disciplines, while also serving students targeting careers in media, international institutions, or public policy roles within labor, financial, and corporate sectors.
