The English Department provides two distinct Ph.D. concentrations, each tailored to different academic pursuits: Literature: This adaptable yet demanding concentration enables doctoral candidates to craft personalized literature-focused curricula in collaboration with their advisory committees. Participants are actively encouraged to engage in scholarly events like academic conferences. Rhetoric and Writing Studies: This track combines foundational training in rhetorical and composition theory with specialized coursework in English language and literature, including opportunities for cross-disciplinary exploration. Students regularly contribute to the professional community through publications, conference presentations, and internships.
Following departmental protocols and working closely with their advisory teams, students develop customized study plans, pass comprehensive exams in their specialization areas, and conduct original research culminating in a dissertation worthy of publication. The program equips graduates with prestigious qualifications for academic careers.
