Pursuing a doctorate allows English students to engage in groundbreaking research across diverse subfields, developing specialized expertise in their chosen area - invaluable preparation for future professors, writers, and scholars. The English Department provides two distinct Ph.D. concentrations, each tailored to different academic pursuits: Literature: This adaptable yet demanding concentration enables doctoral candidates to craft personalized literature-focused curricula in collaboration with their advisory committees. Participants are actively encouraged to engage in scholarly events like academic conferences. Rhetoric and Writing Studies: This track combines foundational training in rhetorical and composition theory with specialized coursework in English language and literature, including opportunities for cross-disciplinary exploration. Students regularly contribute to the professional community through publications, conference presentations, and internships.
Following departmental protocols and working closely with their advisory teams, students develop customized study plans, pass comprehensive exams in their specialization areas, and conduct original research culminating in a dissertation worthy of publication. The program equips graduates with prestigious qualifications for academic careers.
English Department faculty possess deep knowledge in areas including rhetorical studies, composition pedagogy, digital communication, British and American literary traditions, gender studies, public scholarship, and scientific discourse. This breadth of specialization provides doctoral candidates with exceptional opportunities to investigate niche topics under expert guidance.
Our program uniquely combines scholarly excellence, distinguished faculty, and personalized mentorship. We foster close student-advisor collaboration from the outset and cultivate an exceptionally supportive graduate environment where students evolve into professional colleagues.
