Materials science explores how a material's atomic makeup influences its physical characteristics.
The undergraduate program in materials science and engineering trains students to analyze and implement scientific and engineering concepts across various materials like ceramics, glass, and metals, aiming to create improved or innovative products.
Our curriculum prepares graduates for roles in materials production, innovative material design, or material selection processes. The program also provides a foundation for those interested in advanced academic studies.
For optimal performance in a materials science and engineering program, incoming students should possess solid math and science fundamentals. Prior high school coursework in physics and chemistry is advised, along with readiness to enroll in calculus during the first year.

Qualification Requirements
To be admitted to an undergraduate degree program as a regular freshman student, you must be a graduate from an approved or accredited high school (GED certificate may not be used for admission) and satisfy the below requirements:
You must have a 3.0 weighted GPA in the academic core courses in order to be admitted to the University of Nevada, Reno. The academic courses include: English, math, social sciences and natural sciences. A weighted GPA takes into account the extra difficulty of honors, AP or IB classes.
You must submit your final, official high school transcripts to support your application for admission.
SAT/ACT scores: We do not require SAT or ACT scores for admission or scholarship consideration
