The program equips students for diverse career paths including child development or family services program administrators, child development experts, school-age program managers, youth program professionals, community education teachers, parent education instructors, family financial advisors, consumer rights advocates, and family policy specialists. This degree does not qualify graduates for teaching certification. Students may obtain certification in family science practice or the Certified Family Life Education (CFLE) credential through approved HDFS coursework or national examinations.
The curriculum combines theoretical study and research with hands-on field experiences. Learners explore how individuals function within family systems and broader socio-economic contexts. Alongside Department Foundation and Core requirements, students choose 18 credits from designated Required Program Electives. The 120-credit interdisciplinary program incorporates Silver Core classes, HDFS coursework, and general electives, culminating in a senior-year internship.
Upon completion, students will be able to:
recognize and explain biological, psychological, and social factors across the human lifespan, with specialized knowledge in one developmental phase.
understand universal family characteristics and the varied family structures and experiences in U.S. society.
develop effective verbal and written communication skills in Human Development and Family Studies topics.
comprehend major theoretical frameworks in HDFS.
implement discipline-specific knowledge, theories, and methods in professional environments.
To be admitted to an undergraduate degree program as a regular freshman student, you must be a graduate from an approved or accredited high school. You must have a 3.0 weighted GPA in the academic core courses in order to be admitted to the University of Nevada, Reno.
Verification of having met the English requirement through one of the following options: TOEFL score 61+; IELTS (must be academic version) with a score of 6.0+; Duolingo English Exam score 95+; Cambridge score of B2+.
