Environmental pollution presents challenges at local, regional, and worldwide scales, escalating alongside rising human populations and resource demands that strain ecosystems. The Pollution and Environmental Contaminants specialization explores pollutant movement, transformation, and their biological impacts. Coursework examines organic and inorganic pollutants like mercury, pesticides, heavy metals, and newer concerns including pharmaceuticals and antibiotics. Students also study contaminant cycling through air, water, soil, and living organisms. The program includes courses on how environmental pollutants affect human and animal health. This specialization equips students with strong chemistry and physics foundations, opening diverse career paths. Graduates are prepared for advanced study or careers with government agencies (such as Nevada's Environmental Protection Division, EPA, or NRCS), environmental consulting firms, and nonprofit organizations.

Qualification Requirements

To be admitted to an undergraduate degree program as a regular freshman student, you must be a graduate from an approved or accredited high school (GED certificate may not be used for admission) and satisfy the below requirements:
You must have a 3.0 weighted GPA in the academic core courses in order to be admitted to the University of Nevada, Reno. The academic courses include: English, math, social sciences and natural sciences. A weighted GPA takes into account the extra difficulty of honors, AP or IB classes.
You must submit your final, official high school transcripts to support your application for admission.
SAT/ACT scores: We do not require SAT or ACT scores for admission or scholarship consideration
