English-writing majors explore diverse rhetorical styles, from technical to creative composition. The program provides coursework in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, rhetoric, plus technical and persuasive writing. Learners can also acquire professional editing and publishing expertise, master document design principles, and develop tutoring techniques, while optionally supplementing their studies with literature and linguistics electives. Beyond mastering multiple writing styles, majors cultivate analytical reasoning, teamwork and editing abilities, contextual awareness, and presentation confidence. This degree path leads to careers requiring strong writing skills—such as editing, publishing, scientific/technical writing, and corporate communications—while also preparing students for advanced studies in creative writing, rhetoric, communications, or law. Writing studies naturally enhance other academic disciplines, prompting many students to pursue dual majors.
Graduates will demonstrate competency to:
create purposeful documents tailored to specific audiences while following genre and style guidelines.
critically assess their writing processes and implement improved compositional techniques.
analyze and critique an author's intended audience, genre selection, and supporting methodologies.
understand the professional writing contexts they'll encounter post-graduation.
