Social work is a professional field where practitioners assist individuals, families, and groups in managing challenges, facilitating change, and addressing issues across all aspects of daily life. Social workers collaborate with community stakeholders, organizations, and neighborhoods, engaging in initiatives like community development, policy advocacy, and legislative reform. They serve in diverse settings, including mental health services, elder care, domestic violence support, child welfare, school-based programs, healthcare, geriatric services, and addiction treatment. Career advancement opportunities include leadership roles in social service agencies or establishing private practices. What sets social work apart is its focus on the person-in-environment perspective, dedication to marginalized populations, and adherence to core values like social justice, respect for human dignity, cultural diversity, and self-determination. Both BSW and MSW graduates can obtain state licensure for professional practice.
The Master of Social Work (MSW) Program at UNLV equips students for careers in direct client services with individuals, families, and groups, as well as in administrative and community-focused roles. The program's mission centers on training students to serve urban populations through generalist, problem-solving, empowerment, and social justice frameworks. Emphasis is placed on addressing the complex needs of today's diverse communities. Students can specialize in either Direct Practice, focusing on advanced clinical work, or Management and Community Practice, which prepares them for leadership in policy advocacy and human service administration at various governmental levels.
