Established in 1991, the History Department's Ph.D. program represents the highest fulfillment of the Department's goal to create and share new knowledge via research, analysis, and scholarly publications. Students can specialize in three key fields: the North American West, North American Culture and Society, or European Culture and Society. Designed to equip graduates with skills for independent research and critical thinking, the program prepares them for careers in secondary education, community colleges, and universities. The inaugural doctoral degree was awarded in 1996.

Qualification Requirements

Post-Bachelor's subplans

B.A. or equivalent from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.75.
Students must have written an Honors Thesis in History or a closely related field, which must be uploaded as part of the application.
Post-Master's subplans

M.A. or equivalent from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.50.
Students who have not completed HIST 710 and HIST 740 as part of their master's degree will be required to complete them as a condition of their admission. Note: These courses will not count toward the 35 credits required for the Doctor of Philosophy History.
