Landscape architecture combines artistic vision with scientific principles to shape, organize, and oversee both natural and constructed environments. Our Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program integrates creative, cultural, philosophical, and technical learning to equip students for professional practice or advanced studies. The curriculum addresses the intricate relationship between ecological systems and human communities, particularly focusing on the unique issues of the Intermountain West. These include rapid urban expansion alongside declining rural communities, fluctuating resource-based economies, extensive public lands, water scarcity, environmental concerns, and growing needs for recreational spaces.
In Nevada, landscape architecture is shaped by desert ecosystems, tourism-driven economies, and practical problem-solving approaches. UNLV's Department of Landscape Architecture and Planning operates within a vibrant urban setting that presents distinctive design opportunities and environmental management challenges.
Our professional program trains students in various aspects of landscape architecture and planning, from site-specific designs to broad-scale conservation strategies. Alumni contribute to designing residential areas, institutional campuses, commercial projects, parks, urban spaces, and regional landscapes while working to protect and restore both cultural heritage sites and natural habitats.
