Art history is an academic discipline in the Humanities that explores the visual and material creations of diverse cultures across human civilization. At UNLV, Art History students engage with both Western and non-Western artistic traditions through a flexible curriculum that promotes interdisciplinary exploration. The program requires majors to take three foundational survey courses covering European, North American, and non-Western art from prehistoric times to the modern era. Students then deepen their understanding through specialized electives, honing their abilities in critical analysis, reading comprehension, and academic writing. Additionally, Art History majors must complete four consecutive semesters of foreign language instruction.
