The UNO SCCJ Ph.D. program ranks among the best, training the next generation of scholars to develop meaningful criminology research and shape society's approach to crime. As a national leader in criminal justice studies, UNO SCCJ enhances lives through research and education at both local and national levels. Our work strengthens understanding, informs policy, and enhances practices in areas like Violence Intervention, Policing, Victimology, and Corrections. Undergraduate students can choose specialized tracks or minors in Victimology or Policing.
The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice aspires to national prominence for excellence in research and teaching. For doctoral candidates, we cultivate an environment that equips them with essential expertise for academic, public, or private sector careers. The program stresses strong communication abilities, methodological proficiency, statistical knowledge, and practical research opportunities. Doctoral candidates collaborate on research projects with faculty mentors, the Nebraska Center for Justice Research director, and/or the Juvenile Justice Institute director.

Qualification Requirements

Official transcripts documenting completion of a master's degree. Degree may be in process at time of application.
A Master of Arts or Master of Science degree in criminology or criminal justice from an accredited institution is required for unconditional admission into the program.
Applicants holding a master's degree in a related social science field (e.g., psychology, sociology, political science, public administration, etc.), but lacking substantive coursework in criminology and criminal justice may be granted provisional admission. Unconditional admission status will be granted upon successful completion of 18 hours of criminology and criminal justice core curriculum coursework.
English Language Proficiency: Applicants must have a command of oral and written English. Applicants who do not hold a baccalaureate or other advanced degree from the United States, OR a baccalaureate or other advanced degree from a predetermined country on the waiver list, must meet the minimum language proficiency score requirement in order to be considered for admission.
Internet-based TOEFL: 95 with a minimum score of 21 in each of the four areas (the paper TOEFL will NOT be accepted), IELTS: 7.5 (8.0+ is preferred), PTE: 76, Duolingo: 115
