The Department of Agronomy and Horticulture provides advanced degree options, including M.S. (with thesis or non-thesis tracks) and Ph.D. programs in plant and soil sciences. Agronomy focuses on utilizing plant and soil science principles for agricultural production, particularly for staple food crops like corn, wheat, rice, and beans that form the backbone of global food security. Horticulture combines scientific knowledge with artistic cultivation of fruits, vegetables, flowering plants, and decorative species. Unlike large-scale agronomic production, horticulture typically involves more intensive care of smaller plantings - including produce, decorative plants, and turfgrasses - that enrich both nutrition and living spaces.
