Legal principles influence numerous aspects of contemporary American society. Professionals across various fields—including administration, business, education, government, engineering, science, medicine, and beyond—regularly encounter situations requiring legally informed decision-making. Similarly, scholars frequently explore interdisciplinary subjects with legal dimensions. Traditionally, individuals in these positions lacked access to formal legal education unless they pursued a Juris Doctor (JD) degree through law school. While the JD remains essential for legal practice, the University of Nebraska acknowledges that legal interest doesn't always equate to a desire to practice law. This recognition led to the creation of the Master of Legal Studies (MLS) program. Tailored for non-practitioners, the MLS helps professionals deepen their legal knowledge as it relates to their respective careers or academic pursuits without preparing them for attorney roles.
