The Master of Fine Arts in theatre arts is a three-year graduate program with two specialization tracks: design/stage technology and directing. These programs blend rigorous academic study with hands-on professional development to equip students for thriving careers in theatre. Admission is granted through University/Resident Theatre Association (URTA) auditions or via on-campus interviews and portfolio reviews. Applicants to the design/technical track must demonstrate proficiency in drawing or technical capabilities. The curriculum includes advanced coursework in dramatic analysis, theatre history, directing, film studies, production, and design. All theatre instruction and performances take place in the Temple Building, featuring the Howell Theatre, Studio Theatre, and Lab Theatre. Qualified students may apply for teaching assistantship positions.

In addition to the requirements in this application form, all Theatre Arts MFA candidates who make it through the screening process must complete an interview and visit the campus. Applicants to the Office of Graduate Studies whose native language is not English are required to submit a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, 79 on the Internet-based TOEFL or an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall band score of at least 6.5
