The Joint J.D.-M.A. in Political Science program equips students with combined legal and political expertise for diverse career paths. This dual-degree approach proves valuable across public service, corporate environments, academia, and research fields. Government operations and legal systems are fundamentally interconnected. Those examining political systems will inevitably engage with legal frameworks, while law students regularly interact with governmental structures. A deeper comprehension of both domains enhances analytical capabilities for scholars in either field.

Qualification Requirements

A new student must independently apply for admission both to the College of Law and the Graduate College and request admission to this joint degree program. Students must comply with the application procedures of each College. If the student is accepted by both Colleges, he or she is automatically admitted to the program.

The factors which weigh most heavily in admission to the College of Law are the applicant's undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) and the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) score The GPA is evaluated in terms of the applicant's undergraduate institution, courses taken, major and trend of academic performance. An applicant is also evaluated based on letters of recommendation, personal statement, work experiences, extracurricular activities and any other information supplied by the applicant. All transcripts, GREs and letters of recommendation must be received by that date.

Students may apply to both programs before beginning either. Applicants to the Office of Graduate Studies whose native language is not English are required to submit a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, 79 on the Internet-based TOEFL or an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall band score of at least 6.5
