The Barkley Center, which houses the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders, creates an engaging setting for academic, clinical, and research pursuits. The department's programs focus on training professionals to support individuals requiring special education services or those with speech, language, balance, or hearing impairments. Students can pursue various graduate degrees, including Master of Education and Master of Arts in special education, Master of Science in speech-language pathology (with both thesis and non-thesis tracks), Doctor of Audiology, Ph.D. in special education, and Ph.D. in Human Sciences with a concentration in communication disorders. Interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs in educational studies or human sciences offer specializations in special education or communication disorders, tailored to students' career aspirations. Unlike the research-intensive Ph.D., the professional Au.D. degree generally doesn't demand an extensive dissertation or research project.
