This three-year program blends rigorous professional instruction with hands-on production experience. As a student, you'll focus on a primary specialization in scenery, costumes, or lighting while also pursuing secondary studies. Throughout the program, you'll work closely with a faculty advisor who offers personalized guidance. Your training involves designing or making substantial technical contributions to 2-3 annual productions, alongside supporting work in designated production shops.
The curriculum aims to maximize both your technical proficiency and creative potential. Comprehensive course sequences cover all design disciplines, supplemented by advanced classes and independent study in your chosen focus. You'll complete coursework in multiple theatrical production areas and have opportunities to guide undergraduate students as part of your professional development.
Every MFA student must undertake a two-part Final Creative Project (FCP) within their specialization, featuring both realized and conceptual production designs. Additionally, candidates must submit a comprehensive paper detailing their design approach, script interpretation, and production results for both FCP components.
