The Specialist in School Psychology (SSP) Program adheres to the scientist-practitioner approach, where research and theoretical knowledge guide professional practice in school psychology services. The University of Mississippi's School Psychology Program offers a structured curriculum with specialized courses, hands-on practicum placements, and internship opportunities. This NASP-approved program meets all national standards, preparing graduates for both state licensure (Class 6) and national certification (NCSP).
With its strong focus on integrating research and practice, the SSP Program delivers thorough training through academic instruction and field experience. The 69-credit curriculum spans three years: two years of intensive coursework and school-based practicums, followed by a yearlong school internship. Candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive written exam after their second academic year.
The program provides multiple avenues for students to enhance their clinical competencies with youth and families. Practicum seminars address professional ethics while developing expertise in assessment, intervention strategies, and consultation methods. A key program focus involves cultivating cultural awareness to serve diverse populations effectively. The curriculum highlights strength-based approaches and utilizes problem-solving frameworks like RTI to support all learners.
