To teach in K-12 schools, candidates need to earn a degree in their chosen subject area along with completing the teacher preparation program offered by the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. The teaching major or track within the degree program may have distinct course requirements compared to the academic major, as it's structured to align with state standards. After finishing both the degree program with the teaching track and the secondary licensure program, graduates qualify for a standard Montana teaching license in their subject area. This specialized concentration includes coursework tailored to meet state requirements. Aspiring K-12 educators must complete both the education/teaching concentration within their major and the Teacher Education Program administered by the Department of Teaching and Learning. Additional teaching endorsements can be obtained by completing either the education/teaching concentration of another major or an education/teaching minor in that subject.
