The School of Music provides talented students the chance to pursue advanced musical studies, whether for professional aspirations or personal enrichment, while also gaining a well-rounded education. Comprehensive course sequences prepare students for careers as music educators in K-12 schools, composers, professionals in music technology, private instructors, performers, or for rigorous musical training within a liberal arts framework. All campus performances, lectures, and large events are currently suspended or delayed indefinitely, including activities across academic departments, Montana Repertory Theatre productions, and exhibitions at the Montana Museum of Art and Culture and Montana Media Lab. Events that can be adapted to virtual formats may proceed remotely, while postponement options are being explored for others, though the timeline for resuming in-person gatherings remains unclear.
Each year, the UM School of Music serves numerous music majors/minors and engages thousands of university students and community musicians. As a premier institution for music education, performance, and composition, it boasts faculty with national and international reputations along with accomplished students. With complete NASM accreditation, the school offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs and hosts renowned ensembles and events including the All-Star Band, Choir & Orchestra, Grizzly Marching Band, Buddy DeFranco Jazz Festival, Vienna Program, and UM Summer Music Camps.
