Enroll in one of the top Japanese language programs in the Northern Rockies. Our Japanese degree stands out as one of the most robust programs in the Pacific Northwest, with a long-standing tradition. The late Mike Mansfield, former U.S. Ambassador to Japan, initiated Japan-related courses at UM back in the 1930s.
The program provides intensive Japanese language training alongside classes covering Japanese history, linguistic evolution, and contemporary culture—including cinema, manga, and anime. You'll explore classical, pre-modern, and modern Japanese literature, as well as Japanese spirituality, political systems, East Asian historical studies, and Chinese cultural studies. Graduates gain profound insights into Japan's heritage, social structures, literary traditions, spiritual practices, and cultural norms.
Close mentorship defines our program, with faculty actively guiding both academic progress and career development. We emphasize hands-on learning through internships and participation in cross-cultural events that strengthen global perspectives. Students also enjoy multiple study abroad options at UM's nine affiliated Japanese universities.
